The Hives are frenetic, frenzied, and furious, flurried, fast, and ferocious, fantastic, fun, and fabled (I like alliteration, sue me). The Swedish rockers found popularity in the early 2000s, alongside the likes of The Strokes, The Vines, and The White Stripes, during a surge in demand for raw and raucous rock. The Hives first coalesced in the early nineties, and they released a demo and a couple EPs prior to 2000. Their earlier albums have an extremely strong punk rock vibe about them, and that vibe hasn’t vanished; the band still rocks.
The Hives consists of frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, Nicholaus Arson (guitar), Vigilante Carlstroem (guitar), Chris Dangerous (drums), and The Johan and Only (bass). They put on a momentous, energetic, encompassing, and incredible live show, and, while they haven’t released a new album in almost ten years, they still go on tour.
For this week’s song, I’m going with one of the songs that helped put The Hives in your living rooms - Hate to Say I Told You So, but I want you to watch them play it live. The energy, passion, and heart the band puts into their music is contagious, and I hope this sends you down a YouTube wormhole, so you can join me. The Hives are a blast, come get some.
