The Raconteurs - Steady, As She Goes

appears on Broken Boy Soldiers (2006)

Do you ever randomly remember a playground rumour about a rock act that somehow made its way into your knowledge banks and stuck there, despite being a load of old tosh? Keith Richards having all his blood replaced so he could do more drugs, Marilyn Manson undergoing, erm, self-gratifying surgery (you’d think he’d have been far too busy to get any music recording done if he had), Jack and Meg White from The White Stripes being siblings, the list is endless. Wait, what do you mean Jack White himself started that rumour? Does he know about Paul McCartney’s lookalike, too? I need answers!

In a slightly less conspiratorial vein, while The White Stripes were still technically together in 2006, you got the sense that Jack had his eye on other projects for a bit, given how many he would go on to join shortly after the band split. The Raconteurs likely had the biggest global impact after forming in the same year, the Tennessee band starting strong by releasing the first song they ever penned, Steady, As She Goes, to decent chart success all over the place. Unsurprisingly so, too; this is an earworm of a track about a mile long that, if you were in earshot of England in 2006, you literally couldn’t move for hearing. Heck, you might be sick of this one by association! If that’s the case, we’d love to direct you to one of our many other articles, because you’re sure to find something to your taste there! (Okay, I did the ad read. Mr. Editor, please put the board with nails sticking out of it down).

If you do love your mid-2000s indie, however, and you’re in the market for a track that will get your head bobbing in an instant, look no further than Steady, As She Goes as your dutifully sourced Rock Song of the Week Pick. We try our best to make sure all of our picks are locally sourced and artisanal, but let’s be honest, you’d get a whole bunch of the same artists every week if that were the case.

If you like what you hear, please consider purchasing via Bandcamp if the option is available as this is usually the best way to support the artist.
