“Wow, this song is lovely! Who sings it?”

“Oh, it’s by The Band”.

“Ha ha, alright there, joker, which band?”

With that predictable rendition of Who’s On First out of the way, we can get down to business. While they’re not going to win any prizes for originality on name alone, The Band can certainly boast an all-star pedigree to their name. The former backing band for both Bob Dylan and Ronnie Hawkins spawned a successful career beyond the names in front of them, releasing what might be one of the best roots rock albums ever made in their 1968 debut Music From Big Pink. It’s that fine album that we take our Rock Song of the Week pick from this time around, in fact; The Weight was, is, and will likely continue to be one of the all-time best songs in country rock history. Now that is some pedigree.

A song that sounds as fresh now as it did nearly sixty years ago, The Weight is a simply gorgeous track that is going to have you picturing a cold beer in a roadside bar by the end of it, thanks to the song’s use in the film Easy Rider. Still, ain’t that a nice thought for a Friday?
