Avatar - Torn Apart

appears on Black Waltz (2012)

This week we give you Torn Apart by Avatar. There's a gimp in the video. Let's be honest, that's all you really need to know. Go watch it.

Avatar emerged from the tail end of the legendary melodic death metal scene in Gothenberg, Sweden that had previously birthed In Flames, The Haunted and At the Gates amongst others a decade earlier. As you'd expect, their first three albums are more or less exactly that sound. That's not a bad thing by any means, there's a few absolute corkers in particular on their third, self titled album, but you could easily argue that they didn't really bring anything new to the table.

Then around 2012, something strange happened. Legend has it that the band were on the verge of giving up, unhappy with the direction they were going, so they decided to do something a bit different and make an album just for themselves. Frontman Johannes Eckerström got into the clown makeup and the rest is history. Sounds a bit weird? It is .. but it paid off. The resulting album has a little something for every kind of metal fan, whilst still staying true to the band's metal roots. Torn Apart is the second song off that album, Black Waltz.
