Aereogramme - Indiscretion No.243

It felt like the world couldn’t move for alternative rock for a while there, didn’t it? Every band and the band their mum were in had the label slapped on to seemingly massive gulfs in actual listenable genre – are you trying to tell me that Oasis and Pearl Jam live under the same umbrella? Now I think about it, seeing Eddie Vedder and Noel Gallagher trying to get under the same umbrella would be a great spectacle.

Of course, this is all over-simplification for humorous (citation needed) effect. Scottish band Aereogramme, however, really felt like they should be called alternative. The band themselves called 2003’s Sleep and Release “not an easy listen” and it’s not hard to hear why at times – lots of little unexpected flourishes and sharp shifts between soft and screamed tones means it’s not one you can just tune off with it in the background very easily. Their whole catalogue was lightly experimental enough to push them out of the mainstream, which is a shame – they’re a band people should hear more of. Which is where we come in!
While this is definitely on the heavier end of any of the tracks they put out it still slots into their alt-rock furniture ever so sweetly. Check out The Unwinding Hours if you want to see more from former members Craig B. and Iain Cook (who is also a founding member of CHVRCHES, the man is bloody busy) but, for now, enjoy Indiscretion No.243 as your prestigious Rock Song of the Week pick. These things don’t grow on trees, you know. We wish they did; it would save so much money. Cooper’s been downloading albums on our dial-up Internet, so we’ve got nothing left for food. They are very good albums, though.
