appears on Cleansing (1994)
Here’s one more interesting thing to cross off your genre bingo cards, folks; what would happen if thrash and groove metal had a healthy, long-haired baby? I say healthy; whatever strange machinations gave birth to a band like Prong must be somewhat inclined to the strange side of things.
Still, strange or not, it’s hard to deny that Prong have metal chops. The band formed in 1986 in NYC, New York and, after the release of an independent EP and album, were very quickly snapped up by Epic Records to make their major label debut. Albums and a temporary disbanding followed, but the band take change in their stride. Every one of their releases has some quirks or experimental elements that adhere themselves almost seamlessly to the core Prong style. It doesn’t quite reach the heights of innovation, let’s be fair with ourselves, but it certainly kept fresh reasons for coming back to what were usually good albums.
Now you’ve all hopefully finished cringing at the weird eyeball album cover, you can appreciate this equally weird bit of music history. Prong, like eyeballs, are absolutely an acquired taste – especially as the years go backward on in their back catalogue – but Cleansings industrial metal influence saw them approach the height of their abilities and popularity. Who knows, maybe we’ll make a convert out of you yet with Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck. And if not, well if you don’t eat your eyeballs, you can’t have any pudding. HOW CAN YOU HAVE ANY PUDDING IF YOU DON’T EAT YOUR EYEBALLS?
