Nekrogoblikon - We Need a Gimmick

appears on Heavy Meta (2015)

Nekrogoblikon are, or at least for a brief period, were, internet legends, so even if you're not a metalhead you might have at least seen the bonkers video to No One Survives, which went viral on the tubes back in 2012. You can check it out here. For the uninitiated though, it follows a day in the life of a goblin as he goes to work his boring office job and tries to win the affections of one of his co-workers. Seriously, my summary doesn't do it justice - if you haven't seen it, go watch it now, I'll wait.

Fun videos aside, the music, in this writer's humble opinion, is also pretty awesome. It's a bit hard to nail down genre-wise, happily dancing on the line somewhere between melodic death metal (especially on their earlier albums) and whatever you'd classify System of a Down as. In fact the System of a Down influence is certainly not an accident, a couple of years ago the band released their own take on Chop Suey!. The band themselves have referred to it as "Goblin Metal", which I guess does kind of describe it. Whatever you'd classify it as though, their albums certainly make for an interesting listen and I find I keep coming back.

The band has quite a discography to choose from, but after much deliberation I've decided to go with We Need a Gimmick for our pick this week. Taken from the aptly named 2015 album, Heavy Meta, it's another track with a great video which amusingly takes aim at their previous hit. Enjoy!
