In the mid 1990s the rock and metal scene was looking for something new. Nirvana had been and gone, Metallica were taking a break and G’N’R had seemingly disappeared of the face of Earth. Step forward the Californian quintet known as KoRn. Their extremely unusual combination of heavily detuned 7-string guitars, elements hip hop and deliberately dissonant chords gained popularity rapidly, and soon it seemed as though every metal band around was incorporating some of these ideas into their sound.
